I’m so happy to introduce Margaret Dwyer, an accomplished watercolorist and new resident of Eliot Maine. She teaches 3 two session workshops at Sanctuary Arts this Summer- Indoor Garden Party (SA 10), Abstract Themes in Watercolor (SA 11), and Mainely Skies; The Illusion of Light (SA 12). I’m impressed with her enthusiasm for teaching (more than forty years of experience in painting and teaching) and the beauty and imagination of her colorful personal work. As an artist in residence, she developed and led multiple public art programs for Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock, VT. Her watercolors have been included in the “Splash-America’s Best Watercolors” series of fine art books published by North Light, and “How did you Paint That?”, by International Artist books. She has been a featured watercolorist in fine art magazines such as “American Artist”, “Artist Magazine”, “Manhattan Arts”, and as a showcase award winner in “Southwest Art”. She holds an MFA and BFA in visual art. A committed studio artist, she is constantly exploring new themes with traditional and experimental techniques. Margaret says: “I love being a studio artist, but I also have a real passion for teaching. I learn so much from others and being in a group dynamic. Opening the world of watercolor to people has been and continues to be a purposeful mission for me. Ideas and artistic methods are always in motion in my studio, and it is a joy to share that with others through teaching.”

Joshua Langstaff offers 3 three day drawing and painting on location workshops this summer. Drawing Trees in the Landscape (SA 4), Painting Trees in the Landscape (SA 5) and Figure Painting in the Landscape (SA 6). I recommend taking his two Trees classes in tandem, using your tree drawings to inform your tree paintings. Joshua is a master figure painter and his Figure Painting in the Landscape is a perfect way to marry the sensuous beauty of the figure with the vista of a summer garden or landscape. We welcome Rebecca Emerson, a local artist and educator with a deep-rooted passion for clay. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics and Sculpture from the University of New Hampshire in 2015. Since then, she has been creating and teaching out of her home studio in Kittery.  She will be teaching two Intro to Ceramics classes (SA 23 A & B). Rebecca is thrilled to be sharing her passion for ceramics and hopes to inspire others to unlock their own creativity and discover the endless possibilities that lie within this versatile medium.

Julie Marvin offers Handbuilding with Clay (SA 24). Julie received her BA in Studio Arts at UNH, exploring several mediums there. Working with clay has always skirted along the edges of her creative path, and she has spent time working and learning in community clay studios including Santa Fe Clay, Chases Garage and Portland Pottery. Most recently she studied under Yoko Sekino-Bove at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Julie is now turning her attention to handbuilding with clay, and is heavily influenced by her many years working as a professional gardener. She is a resident and studio artist at Sanctuary Arts.

Treasures from the Seashore: Drawing with Colored Pencils (SA 7) is offered by Carol Morley, our marvelous Botanical Illustrator. Her Skunk Cabbage drawing is included in the Retrospective show at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburg right now. Carol also offers a one day Colored Pencil Techniques (SA 9) workshop in July that is well worth attending and learning this versatile medium.

Amanda Rouse returns for her Monoprinting (SA 21) two day workshop on June 1 & 2. Combine painting and drawing with stamping, transfers, textures and a touch of chance! Learn to use water based inks to make painterly prints that are on of a kind and the basics of additive and subtractive printing, registration, color mixing, using textures to create tones, and ghost printing.

So many classes and workshops (24), so much Summer fun!
